Policing with Polycom

video conferencing suite at Lancashire Police Authority

Lancashire Police Authority covers an area of over 1000 square miles. Driving from remote police stations to the regional headquarters in Preston can involve journeys lasting several hours each way. Every week, senior inspectors have been required to make these journeys for meetings and briefings which typically lasted only an hour or two – less time than it took many of them to simply reach Preston.

An existing Polycom videoconferencing system in place at the Preston headquarters provided a glimpse into efficiency gains possible using video. This dual-screen room system enabled headquarters personnel to regularly collaborate with colleagues in other forces around the country, over the national police network. After an extensive evaluation process, they chose to invest in a Polycom solution presented by Saville Audio Visual.

Henry Stott, Senior Systems Engineer in the ICT Dept said: “Saville had the best understanding of our requirements and offered a solution that looked like the best option for the Authority.” A key element in the proposal was the Polycom HDX Series, a flexible telepresence system that delivers high definition voice, video and content sharing and uses the power of the H.264 High Profile video compression to reduce bandwith requirements by up to 50% compared to competitive systems.

The Polycom systems are now used for regular weekly meetings and briefings by senior management and officers. Virtual conference rooms have been set up for each division, so individual users can dial into a meeting on an ad hoc basis using the Polycom RMX multipoint conferencing platform.
